Faster and Better Web Browsing

Posted by Robert on December 5, 2011 in Technical Tips

This article is meant inform you of changes you can make to your network settings to improve and possibly speed up your Mac’s web browsing by changing the DNS Server listings of the network settings in your System Preferences.

DNS (Domain Name Servers) are translators for the W.W.W( World Wide Web) that come into play when you search the web using your browsers URL pane, by typing in a Company name or a topic, against a list the servers maintain that translates the name into an ip address (search dns). Others are there to monitor for possibly suspicious sites

Your Mac upon startup gets an ip address from the router which receives the address of a DNS server from your service provider.

To change or add to the DNS servers of your Mac

1/ Click on the “System Preferences” icon in the DOCK

2/ click on the “Network” icon

3/ Now you see displayed the ip address, subnet mask, router and DNS server now listed for your Mac

4/ to change/add to these settings click on the “Advances” button in the lower right corner of the panel.

5/You now see a panel with six headings at the top, click on the one that says DNS

6/In the left hand window you should see an ip address such as for example 65.144.202 111. to add to the list click once on a blank area of the left window then click on the plus sign at he lower left corner below the window, then in the highlighted area replace the 0.0.0.0 with the following ip’s

208.67.222.222 then use the enter key to set it.

now repeat the process to enter the nest three addresses

208.67.222.220

8.8.8.8

8.8.4.4

The first two addresses are for the DNS  of the OpenDNS that looks for sites that may not be fully trustworthy, watch out for possible “Phishing Sites”

The last two are for the DNS run by Google and are so thought to be more reliable as far as to uptime, thus available to you.

A brief note from me, after doing this upgrade, I have noticed a quicker response to my internet searches.
